Drei Tage nachdem Großbritannien in den Zweiten Weltkrieg eingetreten ist, wird der große, britische Luxusliner Goliath, der sich mit 1860 Passagieren an Bord auf dem Weg in die USA befindet, im Atlantik von einem Torpedo eines deutschen U-Bootes getroffen und sinkt. Etwa 40 Jahre nach dem Schiffsunglück entdeckt das Sonar eines Forschungsschiffes etwas Großes auf dem Meeresgrund und ein Taucherteam wird in die Tiefe entsandt. Der Wissenschaftler Peter Cabot (Mark Harmon) stößt während des Tauchganges schließlich auf das Wrack der Goliath, das bis auf das Einschussloch des Torpedos unbeschädigt zu sein scheint. Als Cabot das Schiffswrack näher untersucht, glaubt er Geräusche aus dem Inneren zu vernehmen und sieht hinter einem der Fenster eine junge Frau. Wieder an der Oberfläche, glaubt man Cabot kein Wort, bereitet aber eine britisch-amerikanische Expedition zur Goliath vor, um Geheimpapiere zu bergen, die an Bord waren. Als das Team durch das Einschussloch ins Innere des Ozeanriesen vordringt, erleben alle eine große Überraschung. Innerhalb des Schiffes hat eine große Anzahl von Menschen in einer Luftblase überlebt und ist in der Lage Sauerstoff aufzuarbeiten und Nahrungsmittel anzubauen. Was zuerst wie ein kleines Paradies auf dem Meeresgrund anmutet, entpuppt sich für die Entdecker schnell als diktatorisches System, das vom tyrannischen John McKenzie (Christopher Lee) mit eiserner Hand regiert wird. Als der erfährt, dass das Expeditionsteam die 337 Menschen im Bootsinneren evakuieren will, versucht er dies mit allen Mitteln zu verhindern… (Quelle: Ofdb.de)

Portrayals of Children in Popular Culture: Fleeting Images, edited by Vibiana Bowman Cvetkovic and Debbie Olson, is a collection which examines images of “children” and “childhood” in popular culture, including print, online, television shows, and films. The contributors to this volume explore the constructions of “children” and “childhood” rather than actual children or actual childhoods. In the chapters that are concerned with depictions of actual, individual children, the authors investigate how the images of those children conform or “trouble” current notions of what it means to be a child engaged in a contemporary “childhood.” This is a unique volume, because of the academic discourse which is employed—that of “Childhood Studies.” The Childhood Studies scholars represented in this collection utilize an interdisciplinary approach which draws upon various academic fields—their methodologies, theoretical approaches, and scholarly conventions—for the scholarly research in this collection.Together, the contributions to this collection interrogate classic notions of childhood innocence, knowledge, agency, and the fluid position of the signifier “child” within contemporary media forms.
